Son of John Francis Owens and Mary Owens of Guildford, NSW.

On 26 December 1917 John married Mabel Annie  Simpkins in Parish Church, Andover, Hampshire, England. Vicar Walter Smith officiated.

Commenced return to Australia 23 September 1918 aboard HT Runic disembarking on 27 November 1918 at Melbourne for onward travel to Sydney
