Private John Nelson Gardner (Service Nos:WX42489/W50308) initially enlisted in the ACMF on 16 June 1942 and served with 16th Infantry Battalion in Darwin NT (24 March 1943 - 23 December 1944). Private Gardner embarked from Darwin, NT on 8 January 1945 for Jacquinot Bay on board the Swartzen Hand with 16th Infantry Battalion. He enlisted in the AIF 'in the Field' on 12 July 1945 and served with 16th and 37/52 Infantry Battalions in New Guinea before embarking from Rabaul for Brisbane on 12 February 1946 on board the Vito. Private Gardner was attached to 16th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 26 June 1946.

Born in 1910 in Fremantle WA, Jack was second of five children of George Dinely Gardner (b1867 in Warwickshire, England) and Catherine (Kate) Elizabeth Seagrove (b1871 in London, England). George (an Insurance Agent) and Kate married in 1908 in Perth, WA and lived in Fremantle and Perth where George was an Insurance Agent and Motorman.

Jack was a Storekeeper in Kalgoorlie, WA prior to his enlistment in the Army, and settled in Perth following his Discharge. He worked as a Storekeeper - living with his mother and brother in Perth, and following his mother's death in 1953, Jack and his brother Bill lived together until the late 1960s. Jack was a Storekeeper until the late 1950s and then worked as a Mowing Contractor. Jack died in 1997.
