Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery, not forgotten.

105 years ago today, on the 6th November 1917, Trooper James Reginald Reid, referred to as Reg, 3rd Australian Camel Battalion, Imperial Camel Corps (Reg No-2523), draper (Manchester Dept, Scott's Limited), from Croudace Street, Lambton, New South Wales or Kendall Street, Lambton, N.S.W., was Killed in action with GSW to the head, Battle of Tel el Khuweilfe, Southern Palestine Offensive, Third Battle of Gaza, age 21 years 3 months.

Born at Lambton, New South Wales on the 8th July 1896 to Peter Joseph (died 23.9.1943) of Elder Street (referred to as Road), Lambton, New South Wales and 210 Bowman Street, Swansea, N.S.W. and Hannah Reid (died 11.8.1953) of Elder Street, Lambton, New South Wales and 210 Bowman Street, Swansea, N.S.W., Reg enlisted ? 1917 (reports state that Reg was attached to the Army Service Corps before transferring to the Imperial Camel Corps, February 1917 Reinforcements) at Menangle Park, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board RMS Morea on the 17th February 1917.

Mr. Reid’s name has been inscribed on the Lambton Park Citizens' Memorial Gates, Lambton Post Office Roll of Honor (also called the Lambton Ladies Anzac Club Roll of Honour and the Lambton Fallen Soldiers Honour Roll, photo, unveiled on the 8thJuly 1916, 5 names originally inscribed of the Fallen, 32 names now inscribed of the Fallen, located at the corner of Morehead and Dickson Streets, Lambton, N.S.W.

Sadly, there is no memorial inscription at the family gravesite to tell us of the loss of their son during The Great War, and I am unable to erected a Memorial cross, so I have placed poppies in remembrance of Reg’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. CATHOLIC 1-24. 3.
