Add my storyBiography contributed by Claude McKelvey
Served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 418, 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Private rising to Sergeant S.N. 46, Siege Artillery Brigade/5th Heavy Artillery Group AIF, WW1.
On various Boer war and WW1 records his name has been recorded variously as, Richard Andrews, Richard G. D. Andrews, Richard George Dennis Andrews, and George Dennis Richard Andrews.
When he enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published (under Richard Andrews) with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as R. J. Andrews, Anakie, C.Q.R.
In the original nominal roll for the 6th Qld Imperial Bushmen Contingent, held by National Archives, he was entered as Richard Andrews and his N.O.K. was recorded as his father R. J. Andrews, Anakie, C.Q.R. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 6th QIB (Qld State Archives) he is entered as Richard G. D. Andrews and it is noted he directed part of his pay to his father Mr. R. Andrews, Anakie, Central Qld. Railway.
When he enlisted again as Richard George Dennis Andrews at Newcastle, NSW, on 5 Jun 1915 for WW1, he noted on his Attestation Paper that; he was born at Emmerville (Emmaville), New England, NSW, and was 32 years of age; he was single and a butcher; his N.O.K. was his brother A. J. Andrews, Anakie, Central Qld Railways; and he previously served in South Africa with the 5th QIB. His N.O.K. was later changed in red on his attestation paper to his wife Nita Louisa Andrews, England.
His WW1 service record held by NAA notes that while serving abroad he was found medically unfit for active service and sent to the Aust. & N.Z. Base at Weymouth, England, for service at the Depot. It appears while serving in Weymouth he met his future wife.
Richard G. D. Andrews was born on 5 Jun 1882 at Emmaville, NSW, a son to Richard James Andrews and Mary Andrews (nee Vaughan). An extract of his marriage certificate on his WW1 service record, p. 20, indicates he married 20-year-old Nita Louisa Swatridge from Chickerell on 14 Feb 1917 in England. It appears they returned to central Qld, following his discharge, where they had 2 children.
It is noted that on the extract of his marriage certificate that his typed name has been altered by hand to George Dennis Richard Andrews, which could account for some documents on WW1 service records using that name.
