Biography

Private James Cameron Brookes was born in 1897 to Adam and Mary Brooks at Richmond NSW. He served for four years with the Junior Cadets and then three years with the Senior Cadets before enlisting in the AIF, with his mother's permission, on the 11th October 1915.

He embarked on the HMAT A60 Aeneas on 20 December 1915 with the 18th Battalion, 8th Reinforcements. He served in Egypt and on the Western Front in France and Belgium.

In Egypt, he proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force on 18 March 1916. In April 1916 he sustained a gunshot wound to his left shoulder and was sent to Britain for convalescing. Following this he was discharged to the Training Depot and finally returning to his battalion in June 1917 who were stationed in France.

James was killed in action at the Third Battle of Ypres in Zonnebeke Belgium on 4th October 1917. He is listed on Panel 23 at Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium.

He received the British War Medal and Victory Medal, Adam and Mary received a Memorial Plaque and Scroll.
