Private Ronald George North (Service No:VX26578) enlisted in the Army on 12 June 1940, attached to 1 Training Battalion. Private North was attached to 2nd/29th Infantry battalion when he embarked from Melbourne for Singapore on 30 July 1941. Reported Missing on 6 April 1942, Private North was confirmed as a PoW of the Japanese on 9 June 1943 (No:16730) and was retrieved from Changi PoW Camp on 9 October 1945. Private North was Discharged on 18 July 1946.

Born on 23 November 1920 in Bendigo Victoria, Ron was the one of three children of Alfred Daniel North (b1885 at Gunbower, Victoria) and Mabel (May) Peace (b1895 at Pyramid Hill, Victoria). Alfred (a Farmer) and May married in 1917 at Cohunna, Victoria where Alfred was a Farmer before retiring to Melbourne.

Ron worked as a Farm Hand at Leitchville before enlisting in the Army in 1940 and in 1945 married Gladys Rita Langford (b1922 in Warragul, Victoria). Ron and Gladys settled in Melbourne where Ron worked as a Glass Beveller and Shipping Clerk and Gladys as a Saleswoman. Ron died in 2000 and Gladys in 2019.
