Joseph Patrick Scott was the son of the late James Joseph and Maria Scott, Clifton Hill, Victoria. John had been born in South Melbourne but was raised in Bendigo, Victoria. He attended the Bendigo Marist brothers college and worked as a grocer. His father practiced as a dentist and chemist in Trentham, Victoria before he passed away in 1915.
Joseph’s older brother, 667 Pte. John Joseph Scott 38th Battalion AIF was killed in action at Passchendaele on 13 October 1917, aged 31.
Joseph enlisted with another brother, 1452 Pte. William Kevin Scott, and they were given consecutive regimental numbers in the 29th Battalion AIF. They were both transferred to the 13th Field Artillery Brigade during March 1916 in Egypt. As part of the 5th Division Artillery, they both served at Fromelles in July 1916.
Joseph was promoted to Corporal the week before he was killed in action in Belgium on 21 August 1917.
His brother, 1452 Pte. William Kevin Scott was serving in the same unit at the time of Joseph’s death and was returned to Australia during May 1918, for ‘family reasons’ due to the death of his two brothers.
