Lance Corporal Edward David Askew (Service Nos:Q137319/QX62619) initially enlisted in the ACMF on 23 June 1942 as a Private with 1 Motor Training Regiment and then 1 Australian Cavalry Training Regiment. Private Askew was attached to 5 Australian Advanced Reinforcement Depot (AARD) on 10 May 1944 when he embarked from Townsville for Lae on board the Duntroon, and was 'in the field' on 3 August 1944 when he enlisted in the AIF. Private Askew served with 29/46th Infantry Battalion, embarking from Madang for Brisbane on board the Katoomba on 26 August 1944. Promoted to Lance Corporal, he embarked with 29/46th Battalion from Brisbane to Jacquinot Bay on 6 February 1945, embarking on 9 May 1945 from Rabaul for Sydney on board the Canberra. Lance Corporal Askew was attached to 29/46th Battalion at Discharge on 25 June 1946. Siblings Arthur and Iris also served in WWII.
Born in Brisbane, QLD in 1923, Edward was second of three children of Henry (Harry) Charles Askew (b1883 in Dalby, QLD) and Harriett May Budd (b1898 in Brisbane, QLD). Harry worked in Mackay and Brisbane as a Labourer and Carrier, and was a Collector/Dealer in 1922 when he and Harriett married in Brisbane. Harry worked in Brisbane as a Collector/Dealer, Drayman and Labourer, and by 1930 Harriett had settled in Bundaberg where she later remarried.
Edward lived in Bundaberg with his mother and step-father, and in 1942 was working as a Foundry Labourer when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge, Edward worked as a Labourer in Brisbane, and in 1947 married Daphne Mary Elliott (b1923 in Brisbane, QLD) - Daphne was working in Brisbane as a Clerk. Edward and Daphne settled in Brisbane, where they raised their family and Edward worked as a Tram Conductor and Bus Driver until retirement. Edward died in 1998 and Daphne in 2001.
