Add my storyBiography
563 Private (Pte) Frank Dean Stillwell, 43rd Battalion. A labourer from Hackham, SA prior to enlistment, Pte Stillwell embarked with C Company from Adelaide on HMAT Afric on 9 June 1916. Later he was Mentioned in Despatches, the citation reading "On 31st July 1917, East of Messines, this man was one of a Lewis gun team in an attack. After the majority of the team had been wounded, he took charge of the gun. He showed great ability and courage under heavy enemy fire. Mainly through his coolness and persistence with which he worked his gun, the enemy was forced to retire after attempting a counter-attack in numbers. He also gave valuable assistance in dressing the wounded." Following his subsequent promotion to Lance Corporal he was killed in action on 1 September 1918, aged 22, and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.
