Samuel married Marguerita Alice Bennet and they had two daughters, Elsie and Florence. Divorced in 1941, Samuel later married Dora Sharp. They had no children, and lived together at Fairfield, Victoria until his death in 1956.

Son of William Andrew Upfill of Adelaide, SA and Caroline Alice Upfill nee Bennett of Thistlewaithe Street, South Melbourne, Victoria .
3 May 1917 - enlisted at Melbourne with the 4th Light Horse Regiment with the rank of Private. Promoted with the rank of Trooper prior to embarking.
6 October 1917 - transferred to the Artillery Details with the rank of Gunner.
22 January 1918 - transferred to the 6th Artillery Brigade
Commenced return to Australia on 31 March 1919 aboard HT Khyber disembarking on 21 May 1919
