He was 23 and the son of James and Ann Matthews, of 21, James St., Portadown, Co. Armagh, Northern Ireland.

Private Matthews of 21 James Street is one of five Australian soldier casualties of the Great War honoured on the Portadown and District War Memorial.

Previous military service-Served for 3 years in the Armagh Militia.
