William Herbert Halstead was born on the 5th of July 1898 to parents William Henry Halstead, and his mother was Elizabeth Ann Halstead. William's first few years of his life were filled with ups and downs as one of his sisters passed away when William was 1, followed by the birth of two other siblings in 2 years. William attended Sydney Tech in 1913-14 and performed average academically, Halstead's early career involved working on large cattle and sheep stations.

Halstead first enlisted on 5 June 1917, but was discharged on medical grounds. He re-enlisted on 27 August 1917, showing his determination to serve his country. this marked the start of his active campaign on the 2nd of November 1917 as his unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on the HMAT A73. Halstead fought as a private for the 1st Light Horse Brigade in the Middle East. 

He was involved in the First Transjordan attack on Amman, aimed at disrupting Ottoman control. From the 30th of April to 4th May 1918, he took part in this significant battle to secure the Jordan Valley. In July 1918 he spent some time in hospital with an infection until mid September. Between the 19th and 25th of September 1918, Halstead was involved in his last battle in the Third Transjordan attack, further pushing back Ottoman forces.

On the 19th January 1919 Halstead left back to Australia on the HMAT Orsova arriving in Australia, 3rd of March 1919. He was discharged 23rd April 1919. On William’s return he went back to his job as a Jackeroo. Nine years after his return at the age of 30 Halstead married Doris T Morehouse. Based on the 1972 Electoral rolls there were 6 Halsteads living in one house indicating the possibility of William and his wife having 4 children above the age of 18. William Herbert Halstead passed away on 2nd September 1967 at the age of 71.
