Son of L. Upton of Shakespeare Road, Herne Hill, London, England.
Previously served with the Grenadier Guards for five years.
3 October 1914 - enlisted at Blackboy Hill, WA, with the 16th Battalion and with the rank of Sergeant.
6 May 1915 - wounded in action. Wound to the left foot.
3 March 1916 - transferred to the 48th Battalion
24 June 1916 - commenced return to Australia aboard HT Port Sydney disembarking on 15 July 1916
Medals: 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal
14 August 1916 - discharged at the 5th Military District with the rank of Company Sergeant Major as medically unfit due to relapsing fever, Malaria
