Biography contributed by Robert Wight

George Frederick Hull enlisted in the AIF at Ballarat on 7 September 1914, aged just 20. He embarked overseas on 22 December 1914. After several months training in Egypt, he sailed for Gallipoli on 12 April 1915. It is not known how long he remained there, however by late November 1915 he was back in Egypt as a Driver with the 4th Brigade transport section. This meant he oversaw a team of horses or mules.

He was transferred to the 10th Field Artillery Brigade (still as a Driver) in Egypt on 30 May 1916, embarked for France on 2 June, and would have seen action near Pozieres in early August 1916.

On 5 October 1916 he was transferred to the 2nd Veterinary Section at le Havre.

While he spent most of early 1917 in and out of hospital with various ailments, on 17 May 1917 he was transferred to the Australian Veterinary Hospital at Calais, where he remained until the end of the war. He was promoted to Sergeant on 6 October 1918.

He departed for Australia on 12 June 1919 and arrived in Melbourne on 27 July, where he was formally discharged from the AIF on 25 September 1919.
