Like many of the men who enlisted in the 1st A.I.F, Clive served in his case for four years with the Citizen Forces prior to the outbreak of World War One. He joined the 3rd Light Horse 25th Reinforcements and left Adelaide on board the Karmala on February 7, 1917. Clive disembarked at Suez on 11 March and proceeded to Moascar Camp. He contracted malaria in Palestine, being hospitalised for three weeks prior to rejoining his unit on 16 November. Clive returned to Australia on the Kantara on the 23 June 1919 and was discharged on 4 August.
