Military Cross recommendation, awarded early 1918 -
“On July 31st 1917, at MESSINES, this officer was in command of Left Assault company during operations.
Due to his careful training and painstaking accuracy of instruction and organisation, his company carried out a complicated manoeuvre of assault, retirement, and reorganisation to tasks in spite of the fact that three out of four platoon leaders were casualties.
Under very heavy shell fire Capt St John supervised the work of this company and their task and by his coolness inspired confidence in his men.
His company carried out all their objectives including a strongly held crater and strong point.
His information to Battalion Headquarters was uniform, accurate and prompt.”
