OBITUARY
MR. JOHN THOMAS PETTINGILL
It was only about a fortnight ago that Mr. J.T. Pettingill, of Port Fairy was admitted to the local hospital and although it was at first thought that his illness was not of a serious nature, he became weakened following an operation, complicatlons ensued and a few days ago his health took a turn for the worse. Despite every attention he passed away on Wednesday evening.
Born at St. Helens 64 years ago, the deceased spent the early part of his life in that district, later at Toolong & Port Fairy, where he was engaged in various occupations, mostly in agricultural pursuits. Shortly after the outbreak of the 1914-18 war he enlisted and served with the 8th light horse in Egypt, being wounded in the Gallipoli campaign. Returning to Australla he took up residence in Port Fairy, where he was married to Catherine McGregor, of Wannon. The late Mr. Pettingill was a member the local sub-branch R.S.A. He was associated in an honorary executive capacity with several local organisations. A member of St. John's church vestry, he was an indefatigable for the fete each year. As hon. secretary of the rifle club, he did a lot of work for this institution, and was keenly interested in this sport, and an exceptionally fine shooter. Football and cricket were two other sports which he never lost interest. For 25 years Mr. Pettingill was engaged as a professional fisherman, and a number of years back was elected a director the Victorian Fishermen's Association also holding the postion of president of the Port Fairy Flshermen's Club organisation for which he did work. Lately he was appointed the skipper of the Naval Auxillary which is under the jurisdlction of the Navy, and also held a position on the Liquid Fuel Board's Committee.
The late Mr. Pettingill was a worthy type of citizen, and his kindness & consideration knew no bounds. Despite his busy life, he had several hobbies, but he always found time to assist anyone in need. Port Fairy and district residents will mourn the loss of a really fine man, and one who answered his country's call when needed in the last war. Deceased twice married, his first wife was Miss Nell Gentles, of Port Fairy. -"Gazette."
