Giles Middleton Crook served as a soldier in World War 1. He did return home from the war, but he sadly passed away soon after. His service contributed to the war effort, and his legacy remains. As a young man, he willingly put his life on the line in service of his country.
Giles Middleton Crook was born in Gumeracha, Adelaide Hills, South Australia, on the 16th of July 1887. He was the third son in his family, with his father, John Crook, mother, Jessie Isabella Chicker, and brothers: William Crook, Edward Henry Crook, Earnest Lloyd Crook, and Walter Crook. He was educated at Forreston Primary School. Before enlisting in World War I, Giles worked as a grocer’s assistant. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in October 1916, and his mother was his nominated next of kin.
Giles Middleton Crook embarked for overseas service on the 16th of December 1916 aboard HMAT Berrima with the 50th Infantry Battalion
Giles Middleton was wounded in September 1917 and sept a month in hospital. He recovered returning to his unit for a couple of weeks before being hospitalised with Pulmonary Tuberculosis in December 1917. His condition was considered to be ‘dangerously ill’. After treatment he was assigned to Depot to recover and returned to his unit in May 1918. Soon after the war ended, he was transferred to the Australian Provost Corps, achieving the rank of Corporal.
He returned to Australia disembarking 20th October 1919. Sadly, he passed away on the 30th of August 1921 at the age of 34, likely due to his tuberculosis infection. He was laid to rest at Waikerie General Cemetery, South Australia. His name is honoured on the Gumeracha WW1 Honour Board, the Gumeracha Town Hall Roll of Honour, and the Forreston Primary School Honour Roll, recognising his sacrifice and connection to his hometown.
