Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

A Forgotten Digger who served and suffered during The Great War, died tragically, resting at Sandgate Cemetery, Honour and Dignity to be restored.

83 years ago today, on the Monday afternoon of the 20th October 1941, Private Joseph Michael Codyre, 3rd Battalion (Reg No-1722), tailor from 80 Thompson Street, Darlinghurst, New South Wales and 6 Villers Street, Grafton, N.S.W. (1931) and Manilla, N.S.W. (1935) and Dowling Street, Dungog, N.S.W. (1940) and 116 Hannell Street, Wickham, N.S.W. (1941) and the Tram Car Camp, Waratah, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 51. GENERAL-28. 9.
Death certificate incorrectly spelt as GODYRE.

Born at Westport, New Zealand about 1889 to Henry John and Elizabeth Codyre of Palmerston Street, Westport, New Zealand and Henley Street, Westport, New Zealand and 12 Mowbray Street, Wellington, New Zealand, Joe enlisted on the 5th January 1915 at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A9 Shropshire on the 17th March 1915.
Admitted to hospital 17.8.1915 (septic knee).

Wounded in action 24.6.1916 (gunshot wounds both feet, severe, Fleurbaix, France, amputation of toe).

Granted furlough to England from 1.9.1916 to 16.9.1916.

Commenced return to Australia 4.5.1917.

Joe arrived home invalided on the 5th July 1917, being discharged medically unfit on the 6th December 1917.

I have not located Mr. Codyre’s name inscribed on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

The tragic circumstances of Joe’s death were reported that he had drowned in stormwater drain.

I located this Forgotten Digger resting in an unmarked grave, so July 2020 I placed a cross adorned with poppies in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

I submitted an application to DVA July 2020 asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip, but unfortunately this was declined August 2020.

Many thanks to Phil Winney and members of Merewether - Hamilton - Adamstown RSL sub-Branch for the purchase of death certificate.

A Plaque shall be installed at the gravesite courtesy of the Forgotten Diggers Headstone Project. Grave photo is a Virtual Image created by Terry St George to show us what the concrete base with plinth and Plaque would look like when gravesite is complete, so Joe is “Forever Remembered”. (EE:  Hear, hear!)

Younger brother Henry David, Harry, born about 1890, Westport, New Zealand, enlisted 21.12.1914, Australian Field Artillery, Reg No-3536, died?, also enlisted 1st A.I.F., did not serve overseas.

Contact with descendants would be greatly appreciated.
