On the 21 August 1917, 2nd Lieutenant Clive Waddington Davies was shot down and captured by the Germans. Davies was serving as a flight commander with 55 Squadron RFC flying low level bombing missions in DH4 aircraft. His DH4 was wrecked after it crash landed after being attacked by enemy aircraft. His observer Lt. W.R. Cooke was also wounded and captured. The pair had brought down a German aircraft a few days previously. Davies had served in as a sergeant in Egypt, during his service in the 4th Field Artillery Brigade AIF, and returned home safely at the end of the war.
