Son of John Munney Oakman and Selina Ellen Oakman of Humula, NSW later of Kyeamba, NSW.

Brother of Athol James Roy Oakman who returned to Australia on 7 August 1919 having served with the 1st Field Squadron Engineers: Reuben Munney Thornet Oakman who was killed in action on 3 May 1917 while serving with the 17th Battalion and has no known grave. His name appears on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial

Commenced return to Australia on 15 June 1919 aboard HT Essex disembarking on 25 July 1919
