90 years ago today, on the Monday afternoon of the 8th April 1935, Lance Corporal Edward George Penfold, referred to as Ted or Teddy or Tiddie, 18th Battalion (Reg No- 1265A), labourer from 17 Harrison Street, Cardiff, New South Wales and Rhondda Road, Teralba, N.S.W., father of six (Lance, Ken, Marie, Arnold, Ailsa and baby Judith), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 36. ANGLICAN 2-133. 71.

Born at Cardiff, New South Wales on the 15th May 1898 to William, died 28.8.1948, Cardiff, N.S.W., age?, buried at METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) I SE. 29, unmarked grave?, and Esther Penfold nee Genge, died 9.2.1908, Cardiff, N.S.W., age?, mother of 8, sleeping at METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) I SE. 29, unmarked grave?; husband of Vivian Gladys S Penfold nee Parrey, married 1919, Wallsend, N.S.W., died 15.5.1978, Carey Bay, N.S.W., age 81, 43 years a widow, ashes Newcastle Memorial Park, Ted enlisted on the 15th May 1916 (his 18th birthday) with the Light Trench Mortar Battery, Reinforcement 2, at West Wallsend, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A40 Ceramic on the 7th October 1916.
Disembarked Plymouth, England on the 21st November 1916.

Transferred to 18th Battalion 6.2.1917.

Wounded in action - 4.10.1917 (contusion, eye), 31.8.1918 (GSW left arm & left leg).

Granted leave to England from 10.2.1918 to 24.2.1918.

Ted arrived home on the 4th February 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 4th April 1919.

Mr. Penfold’s name has been inscribed on the Cardiff Methodist Church Roll of Honour, Cardiff War Memorial and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at Ted’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
