Real name was Robert James Tarlingon under which he enlisted on 16 November 1914 with the 7th Light Horse Regiment. Service number 801. Then re-enlisted under the name of Robert James Adams having been court martialled as Tarlington for desertion in June 1917 having not embarked in 1915
Son of Edward Herbert Tarlington and Mary A. Tarlington of 82 Talyor Street, Annandale, NSW
On 13 December 1918 Robert using the surname of Adams married Jean Alice Clara Percy in the Registry Office, Holborn, London, England. Registrar FrederickH. Shapcott officiated
Returned to Australia on 19 May 1919 aboard HT Dongala
In 1923 Robert married Mary (Molly) Meredith in Sydney, NSW using the surname of Tarlington

When enlisting for WW2 he lowered his age by at least eight years and changed his place of birth Enlisted fat Paddington, New South Wales, Australia with service number NX8553 but was discharged on 24 January 1941.
When he re-enlisted on 28 April 1941 under service number NX2711 he gave his date of birth as 12 April 1903 and his occupation as a Motor Driver. Discharged as medically unfit on 12 March 1942 while serving with the Australian Army Service Corps Training Depot
