"He was Watty to One and All"

Walter George Wallace was born George Walter Gordon Wallace on the 16 January 1900 in Stamford Queensland, he was the son of of Charles Wallace and his wife Minnie (nee Collins). He was educated in Mareeba and Chillagoe Queensland primary Schools before joining the First Australian Imperial Force in 1916. He put his age up by 2 years in order to enlist and saw action in France and Belgium with the 7th and 21st Machine Gun Companies. On his return to Australia he joined the meat industry, working as a slaughter man and butcher.
On the 7th of December 1920 he Married Lillian May Clark and together had one son, Lillian died in 1936 and in he married again in 1937 to Alice May Kiefel, she died in 1977.
Wallace died on the 12 October 1964 and was buried in Cairns at the
Martyn Street Cemetery.
Public Career
Wallace started out in politics as and aldermanin Cairns City Council from 1949 to 1956. At the 1956 Queensland State Election he won the seat of Cairns for the Labor Party, taking over from the retiring member,
Thomas Crowley.
He Represented the electorate until his death in 1964.
