Leading Aircraftman Alan Smith (Service No:126846) initially served in the Militia (Private; Service No:328844) with 52nd Infantry Battalion from 30 August 1938 to 5 June 1940 when he Discharged to enlist in the AIF. Private Smith (Service No:VX22783) served with 2/14th Infantry Battalion in the Middle East (2 October 1940 - 30 January 1942) and was Discharged on 10 September 1942 (Medically Unfit - Asthma). As Aircraftman I, he enlisted in the RAAF on 11 February 1943 at No 1 Recruiting Centre RAAF Melbourne and served with 1 Embarkation Depot (1ED), 24 Operational Base Unit (OBU), and 7 and 80 Squadrons. Promoted to LAC on 1 September 1943, he served in New Guinea (7 January 1944 - 15 June 1944) and was attached to 1 Wireless and Gunnery School (WAGS) at Discharge on 13 November 1945.

Born Allan Howard Simpson in 1917 in Melbourne Victoria, he was a few months of age when adopted by Albert (Bert) Ernest Smith (b1891 in Neerim, Victoria) and Lucy Annie Ford (b1887 in Kent, England) - their first born died in 1916 - and renamed Alan (nicknamed Doon). Bert and Lucy married in 1914 in Pinjarra, WA and settled in Neerim where Bert worked as a Labourer, Splitter and Farmer, and served in WWI (Private; Service No:2756)

Alan worked as a Labourer in Warragul and Neerim and stated he was a Motor Mechanic when he enlisted in the RAAF. In 1945 in Ballarat, Alan married Jean Millicent Jurey(b1915 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Jean was a Weaver in Ballarat. Alan and Jean lived in Ballarat and Ouyen, Mildura where they raised their family and Alan was a Railway Employee and Carpenter. Alan died in 1966 and Jean in 1967.
