An Original Anzac of The Great War awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.

105 years ago today, on the 22nd July 1916, Private Percy James Penfold, 56th Battalion (Reg No-10A), wheeler from Catherine Hill Bay, New South Wales, Died of Wounds received at the Battle of Fromelles, age 26 years 11 months.

Born at Hamilton, New South Wales on the 29th August 1889 to George Augustus (died 1941) of Waratah Road, Broadmeadow, New South Wales and Woodtop Road, Broadmeadow, N.S.W. and Lloyd Road, Lambton, N.S.W. and Maitland Road, Sandgate, N.S.W., and Martha Ann Penfold nee Brooks (died 1959, Raymond Terrace?) of Lindsay Street, Hamilton, N.S.W. and Alexander Street, Kurri Kurri, N.S.W.

Percy enlisted August 1914 with the 2nd Battalion (Reg No-668) at Randwick, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 2.7.1915 (not stated), and wounded in action - 20.7.1916 (GSW neck, hands and legs, gas gangrene of leg, Battle of Fromelles), Percy is resting at Calais Southern Cemetery, France. Plot E Row 2 Grave 16.

Mr. Penfold’s name has been inscribed on the Catherine Hill Bay Honour Roll of Soldiers, Catherine Hill Bay Honour Roll, Catherine Hill Bay War Memorial, Catherine Hill Bay Cornstalk Lodge G.U.O.F.G. Roll of Honour and the Book of Gold. Name possibly inscribed on the Catherine Hill Bay Free Gardeners' Lodge Roll of Honour.

Younger brother Stanley G A (35th Battalion, Reg No-1209, born 1893, KIA- 4.4.1918) also awaiting memorialisation same location.

There is no headstone at the gravesite of Mr. George Augustus Penfold to tell us of the supreme sacrifice of his boys during The Great War, so June 2021 I placed 2 memorial crosses adorned with poppies in remembrance of their supreme sacrifice for God, King and Country. ANGLICAN 1-41.
