Private Donald Walter Kemp (Service No:WX6599) enlisted in the Australian Army on 16 July 1940 - he had enlisted in the ACMF 16th Battalion on 12 April 1940. Private Kemp served in the Middle East (3 January 1941 - 18 April 1943) and New Guinea (7 August 1943 - 7 March 1944) with 2nd/28th Infantry Battalion and 9 Divisional Salvage Unit. Private Kemp was hospitalised on several occasions with Malaria, and was Discharged on 3 October 1945.

The youngest of three sons of Walter (Wally) Kenneth Kemp (b1884 in Picola, Moira, Victoria) and Alberta Louisa Gilham (b1886 at Fyan's Creek nr Stawell, Victoria), Donald was born in 1919 in Kalgoorlie WA. Wally (a Painter with the WAGR) and Alberta married in 1907 in Coolgardie WA. Wally worked as a Painter for the WAGR all his life, and in the 1920s moved his family to Claremont WA.

Donald worked for the Agricultural Bank as a Bank Clerk and was in Northam WA in 1940 when he enlisted in the ACMF. In 1943 in Perth WA Donald married Eileen Summerfield (b1918 in Fremantle, WA) - Eileen was a Waitress in South Perth. Following his Discharge, Donald and Eileen lived at Northam and Kojonup where Donald was a Bank Officer. By 1958 they had settled in Perth. In the early 1970's Donald and Eileen divorced, and in 1972 Donald remarried - Eileen Ita Dowdall (b1931 in Louth, Ireland) - Eileen was working as a Saleswoman in Perth. Donald died in 1996 and Eileen Ita in 2008.
