Major Harold Conkey started as a Captain in the 2nd/4th Battalion on October 13th, 1939. He was present for the First Desert Campaign where he led 'B' Company, 2nd/4th Battalion into Benghazi- this Company being one of the first Allied unit to enter Benghazi. He later served on Greece where he won the Military Cross, then onto Crete commanding 'B' Coy all the while. He finished the war a Major, discharged in 1944.
'On 12th April, 1941, when the battalion withdrew under orders froma defensive position south west of Veve (Greece), Capt. Conkey showed great courage and determination in extricating his company from close contact with the enemy. By fire and manoeuvre the company was withdrawn with few losses after inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy. During the action the Company Sergeant Major was severely wounded and Capt. Conkey gallantly returned to him and under heavy fire carried him to safety.'
