A storeman from St Kilda, Victoria, prior to enlistment L Cpl John Thomas (Jack) Cooper played 136 games for the Fitzroy Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) from 1907 until shortly before his enlistment in 1915. He also captained the team for a time.
Prior to serving on the Western Front, Cooper played a match for the Australian Training Units team in England.
Lance Corporal Cooper was killed in action during the Battle of Menin Road, Belgium, on 20 September 1917, aged 28.
