Albert was born in Kyabram, the son of Arthur Edward Dougherty and Margaret Ellen Colbert.
He married Thelma Jean Bunn in 1942. They lived in Cobram until 1984 when they moved to Deniliquin.
They had five children, two sons and three daughters.
