Harold was severely wounded in July 1916. After several months in hospital in England, he returned to Australia in July 1917, and was discharged unfit as a consequence of his wounds in February 1918.
Harold took up a soldier settlers' block near Inverell called "Lochinvar" where he lived, worked and raised his family until his death in 1955.
