This lad's father died of yellow fever while on active service during the time of the Boxer Rebellion. He enlisted with the engineers. Two other brothers of this lad saw service in this late war one having paid the supreme sacrifice. (details from Guardian)

Brother of Thomas Edward Hamilton who died of wounds on 23 November 1916 while serving with the 45th Battalion and was buried in the Bernafay Wood British Cemetery. Father
Able Seaman John Hamilton, was one of only six Australians who died during the Boxer Rebellion. He was serving with the NSW Marine Light Infantry when he was killed at Tung Chao in China on the 6th November 1900. He was the first sailor to die in an Australian expeditionary force overseas.
