Bill was the eldest child of Alexander (Alex) William McKenzie (b1891 in Ballan, Victoria) and Marion (Kitty) Kate Crole (b1895 in Meeniyan, Victoria). Alex - a Farm Labourer - and Kitty married in 1919 at Meeniyan, Victoria. Alex had served in WWI (Gunner, Private: Service No:14716) and was WiA in 1918. Alex and Kitty settled at Gunyah, Morwell, Gippsland, Victoria where they raised their family and Alex was a Farmer. By 1967 they retired to Phillip Island.

Bill was a Farmer when he enlsited in the Militia in 1939 (Private, Service No:335121) serving with 29/22 Battalion. He served as a Private (Service Nos:VX37248/VX53319) with 22 Infantry Battalion and 2/17 Battalion and was Discharged in 1944.

Returning to Mirboo, Bill was a Farmer and in 1949 married Olive Muriel Bellingham (b1928 in Gippsland, Victoria). Bill and Olive settled in Mirboo, where Bill was a Farmer before relocating to Denison in Gippsland. By 1970 Bill had retired and he and Olive settled in Sale, where Bill died in 1975 and Olive in 2016.
