Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

James was the son of John and Catherine Smith, of Hotspur, Victoria. He left Australia with the 8th Battalion but was taken on strength of the 6th Battalion when he arrived in Egypt during early 1916.

He survived the very heavy fighting at Pozieres and was promoted to Corporal after the battle. He was wounded in action on 6 February 1917, shrapnel, left thigh and he died of his wounds in the 45th Casualty Clearing Station two days later.

His much older brother, 2477 Trooper Duncan Smith, 4th Australian Light Horse Regiment, died of pneumonia in Syria on 18 October 1918, aged 40.
