From Brothers who died in the Great War by Frank Mahieu
GORDON & JAMES GAVIN
both killed 4 Oct. 1917.November 26, 2016
On 4 october 1917 during 3rd. Battle of Ypres The brothers Private Gavin Gordon Bulkeley Gavin, aged 25, and Lance Corporal James Tinnock Bulkeley Gavin, aged 23, of 26th Battalion (7th Bgd. 2nd Division) Australian Imperial Force, were both killed in action at Broodseinde (3rd. Ypres), within a very short time of each other and within a rather small distance. James was killed by a German shell at about zero hour (5.25am) when the Australian battalions were waiting to attack at their starting line at just about Zonnebeke church. The German artillery bombardment delayed to advance till 6 am. Gordon was killed at about 9 am, shot though the head by a German sniper, when the 26th battalion advanced at Broodseinde ridge (Anzac ridge) towards their objective, the blue line, at some distance in front of Daisy Wood.
They were the sons of John and Rose Gavin (nee Le Poer), of Longreach, Queensland and they are buried near to each other at Ypres Reservoir War Cemetery, Ypres.
James’ body, found in 1921, was buried at Ypres Reservoir Cemetery, Gordon was first buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery, but on request of the parents, Gordon finally was buried near his brother James at Ypres Reservoir Cemetery. They so now rest close to each other.
Gordon was born at Rockhampton, Queensland. He was educated, as was his brother James, at the Catholic Longreach Presentation Convent, but their personal religion was Presbyterian. Prior to his enlistment Gordon was an overseer while James was a stockman salesman with 'Gavin & Sons' (auctioneers and insurance agents, stock and property salzesman, accountants, auditors and general commission agents). Gordon enlisted on 30 September 1916 at Brisbane while his younger brother James enlisted there earlier on 26 April 1916. James was 6.1 tall (1.86m) weighing 125 lbs (56,7 kg) (have no details for Gordon). Gordon embarked for Europe on 26 October 1916, James the next day 27 October 1916, however since they sailed on the same ship, this embarkation must have been on the same day, so most probably the 27th.
On Oct.4th 2017 I paid a centenary tribute to these 2 brothers at their graveside with my friend piper Gil, and on 4 Oct 2018 and 2019 we again paid tribute to these brothers. Not Forgotten.
