James enlisted in the 2nd AIF in 1940 as 'all his mates were joining up'. He was allocated to the 2/17th Infantry Battalion. Whilst En route to Europe, FRance captiulated and Australian troops were re-directed to the Middle East. He was a Rat of Tobruk during the 9 month seige of that port. Whilst there he was 'claimed' by anolder brother who was serving in the 9th Div. Provost. He was not happy in that role having neither the temperment nor the desire to be a policeman and it took his some months to get a transfer back to his mates in the Battalion. After rest in Palesting he returned to Egypt where he took part in the decisive battle of El Alemain.
He returned to Australia in 1943, married and in 1944 took a discharge. He was survived by his wife and 5 sons.
