Roderick was the son of Matthias William and Emily Ann Wood, of Mascot, New South Wales. His older brother, 4638 Pte. Herbert Victor Wood 45th Battalion AIF was killed in action nine days later on 29 September 1917, aged 26.

Roderick enlisted during February 1916 and arrived in England during late 1916. He joined the 20th Battalion on the Western Front in May 1917. He was killed in action during the heavy fighting for Menin Road Ridge on 20 September 1917. Roderick has no known grave. His brother, Herbert, was buried in the Menin Road South Cemetery only nine days later.

Their father, Matthias, died in Sydney on 11 January 1921. Their mother Emily received pensions for both sons, as well as their medals and entitlements.
