Albert was the third of eleven children of Ernest Marlin (born 1856 in Richmond, NSW) and Laura Anne Kennedy (born 1859 in Richmond, NSW). In 1875, as a member of the Richmond Volunteer Rifles (Regimental No:7886) Ernest was awarded a Land Grant - he was a Carpenter and Builder when he married Laura in 1877. They settled at Richmond to raise their family, and Ernest's business expanded in 1894 to provide funeral services, including coffins. Eldest son Fred was 18 years of age when he hung himself in his father's business premises in 1896. Ernest was known as a keen athlete and cricketer, and was one of the oldest members of the Richmond branch of the Manchester Unity Order of Oddfellows.

Albert - a keen sportsman and cricketer - was a Carpenter in Sydney, NSW in 1906 when he married Lily May O'Keefe (born 1887 in Murrumbah, NSW). He served eight years with Richmond Volunteers Infantry, and was in Rockhampton, QLD when he enlisted in the AIF in July 1915. Albert was a Private (Service No:3140) with 25th and 26th Infantry Battalions and served in France, where he was WiA in 1917. Albert was Discharged in 1919. Brother Robert (Bob) served in the Boer War (Trooper, Service No:548); brothers -Frank Donald (Private; Service No:3154) was KiA at Pozieres, France; Arhibald (Archie) Roy (Private, Service No:2728) was KiA at Villers Bretonneux in France, and Bernard Clive (Sergeant; Service No:1025) also served in WWI.

Albert returned to Richmond and continued the family business - father Ernest had died in 1915
