"Among the soldiers who are expected to arrive at the Adelaide Railway Station at 9 a.m. to-day are the following, who have won distinctions on the front: — Major Clarence Rumball, M.C., 10th (S.A.) Battalion, who returned as officer commanding the troops on the transport, is an original Anzac. He was appointed second lieutenant in the 10th Battalion on August 19, 1914, at the age of 22 years, and left Australia on October 20 of the same year. As lieutenant, he took part in the Gallipoli landing, and was promoted captain on the following day. While serving on the peninsula he was mentioned in despatches by Sir Ian Hamilton. He was adjutant to his battalion from May 4, 1916, to October 23 of the same year, and he was promoted major on March 30, 1917. His Military Cross, which was gazetted on April 26 of that year, was awarded for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as captain. Under heavy fire he made several reconnaissances of unknown ground, and by his quick appreciation of the situation and prompt action greatly assisted in the success of the operations. Major Rumball is one of three sons of Mr. H. S. Rumball, of Unley, South Australia, who have seen active service in the war. Prior to enlisting he was in the, paymaster's department of the South Australian Railways, and held the rank of lieutenant in the 78th Infantry Regiment, Australian Military Forces."
