William was born in Maryborough, son of William Ross and Elizabeth Ann Ford.

Private Ross enlisted in Townsville on 26 Aug 1915 and embarked from Brisbane per HMAT A69 “Warilda” on 5 Oct 1915.

He served on the Western Front with the 9th Battalion AIF.  He was Killed in Action in France on 7 May 1917, and has no known grave. His name appears on the Australian National Memorial in Villers-Bretonneux, France, and on Panel 57 at the Australian War Memorial. William was a labourer.
