Sidney Owen Roberts was born on the 8th of September 1892 in Prahran, Melbourne VIC and at some point moved to South Australia. His religion was Methodist. He had brown eyes and dark hair with a dark complexion. Roberts was 5’8 ½ and had a chest measurement of 38 ½ inches with a weight of 167 lbs. His next of kin was his aunty Emily Oliver who lived in Adelaide. He was a grocer, before enlisting in the A.I.F on the 6th of September 1915 in Adelaide at age 23. Roberts arrived in the camp on the 21st of September 1915.  He embarked, service number 11066 on H.M.A.T Afric in Adelaide, 9th of June 1916. Previously to joining the A.I.F he had also served for 3 ½ years in the military. 

Before the war Roberts was single but after the war at the age 27, he married Rose Halford Adcock on the 16th of July 1919 in St. Johns church in Paddington, London.

The unit he was in at the start of his A.I.F career was 25th Australian Army Service Corps 3rd Division train, he began as Private, which meant he was at basic army rank. Roberts was Private from the 21st of September 1915 till the 15th of October 1915 after he moved up to Corporal rank on the 16th of March 1916 meaning he was in command of a section of soldiers which consisted of two fire teams.   

During his time, he was often sick and was sent to the hospital a lot. He started by proceeding overseas to France on the 25th of November 1916. During his stay he was admitted to hospital in St Omer, France as he was sick in the field on the 10th of December 1916 for a case of mumps and was transferred to No.7 gen hospital on the 11th of December 1916 and rejoined his unit from hospital on the 16th of January 1917. Whilst he was still in France, he was admitted to the hospital again as he was sick from the field on the 26th of October 1917 with gastritis, a condition where there is inflammation of the stomach lining, and rejoined duty from the hospital in France on the 28th of October 1917 and was sent to England for duty with A.A.S.C.  T.N.G. Depots on the 30th of November 1917.

Continuing, on the 30th of November 1917, Corporal Roberts proceeded to join A.A.S.C, Australian Army Service Corps, and was sent to A.A.S.C. Depot Parkhouse France on the 27th and got back to England on the 29th of June 1918. On the 1st of July 1918 Roberts marched in England and rejoined his unit on the 10th of July 1918.

Roberts was sent to hospital again for a period VD. 62 days, 11th of July 1918 till 10th of September 1918 and rejoined his unit on the 18th of September 1918 and then went back to the hospital sick and was admitted to hemorrhoids on the 14th of December 1918. On the 3rd of January 1919 Roberts was admitted Ontario Military hospital Orpington for prolapse hemorrhage and was discharged on the 25th of January 1919. On February 10th his aunt, Emily Oliver, was sent a notice stating that Roberts was suffering from prolapse hemorrhage at camp in Salisbury on the 29th of January.  Later he went to England for duty on the 10th of March 1919 and later returned to Australia – Waimana on the 3rd of November 1919.

After this, Roberts was promoted to corporal temporary sergeant on the 1st of August 1919 and later, on the 18th of December 1919 was promoted to E.R Sergeant.

He and his wife returned to Australia 18th December 1919 and he was discharged 26th April 2020.

He died on 23rd of October 1959.
