Prior to coming to Australia John had served with the 90th Battalion Militia, Manitoba Canada, Royal School of Canadiam Mounted Infantry and Duke of Connaught Hussars, Montreal.
Commenced return to Australia on 4 May 1917 aboard HT Runic for discharge disembarking on 5 July 1917 at Melbourne for onward travel to Sydney
