Add my storyBiography contributed by Stephen Brooks
Ivar Young was the son of Henry Martini Westphalen Young and Mary Jane Young of Richmond, Victoria. His father, Henry, born in Norway, had perished in a cyclone whilst pearling off the coast of Broome, Western Australia during 1908.
His brother, 2268 Pte. Gilbert Young 59th Battalion AIF was later killed in action in France on 8 March 1917, aged 22.
Ivar enlisted in Shepparton during late September 1914. He was reported as wounded during May 1915, and the Richmond Guardian printed “Private Ivor Young (wounded) is the son of the late Mr. H. Young and Mrs. Young of 36 Docker Street. He is 22 years of age and has resided in Richmond for nine years. He was employed by Turner Bros., South Melbourne, and for a short time prior to enlisting was working in the country. He was well known locally and played with several junior football and cricket clubs.”
Ivar was reported as killed in action at Gallipoli on 28 June 1915.
The Richmond Guardian printed another article on 24 July 1915. “Private Ivor Young (killed) was reported wounded some weeks ago, when a personal paragraph was published in the “Guardian.” He was the son of. Mrs. H. Young, of 36 Docker Street, and was 22 years of age. Mrs. Young has had a heavy share of sorrow. Her husband was drowned in a cyclone on the West Australian pearling grounds about six years ago, and her third son (eight years of age) was drowned in a quarry-hole at Burnley. Since Private Young was reported wounded, the only word his mother had received up to the news of his death was an active service post-card, dated June 6, stating that all was well and that a letter would follow. The letter never arrived.”
His mother Mary was awarded a pension of two pounds per fortnight from October 1915. She was awarded another two pounds per fortnight from May 1917 as a result of the death of her other son Gilbert Young.
