Private Clarence Augustus Langford (Service No:644) enlisted in the AIF on 11 December 1916 and was attached to 6th Machine Gun Coy on 10 May 1917 when he embarked from Melbourne for Plymouth on board HMAT Clan McGillivray A46. Private Langford was WiA in France (GSW thigh) on 5 October 1918 and embarked for the RTA on 6 May 1919 on board HS Karoola. He was attached to 2nd Machine Gun Battalion at Discharge on 8 April 1921.
Born in 1893 in Melbourne Victoria, Clarence was the youngest of nine children of James Langford (b1848 in Sydney, NSW) and Blanche Pope (b1850 in Gloucestershire, England) - Blanche immigrated in 1853, arriving in Melbourne, Victoria with her parents on board the Ida. James (a Tobacco Worker) and Blanche married in 1875 in Melbourne, Victoria where they settled and raised their family.
Clarence was a Salesman in Melbourne when he enlisted in the AIF and following his Discharge was a Motor Driver in Melbourne. He joined the Commonwealth Public Service in 1927 as a Mailman with the Postmaster General's Department. In 1932 he married Anne Hinkley (b1888 in Casterton, Victoria) - Annie had worked as a Cook in Melbourne and was a Saleswoman when she and Clarence married. Clarence and Annie settled in Melbourne where Clarence was a Mailman until 1940. Clarence died in 1945 and Annie in 1978.
