Marton Frederick Gordon SMITH was born in Everleigh (Redfern) Sydney on 22nd August, 1898
His parents were George Baker & Harriet Eliza SMITH
He first joined the Royal Australian Navy on 22nd January, 1914 and then subsequently enlisted for WW1 on 7th September, 1915 & embarked on the HMAT Warilda on 8th October, 1915 with the 3rd Infantry Battalion, 10th Reinforcements
Marton served in WW1 under the name Frederick SMITH
He was Killed in Action on 24th July, 1916 - buried in the vicinity of Pozieres but grave now unknown
His name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial & the Villlers Bretonneux Memorial

His correct name is Marton Frederick Smith, he served under Frederick Smith. He was 17 years 11 months old at time of death. His family epitaph reads- WE STILL HAVE FAITH, THO' CLOUDS ENVIRON NOW, AND GLADNESS HIDES HER FACE IN SCORN, WE'LL PUT THE SHADOW FROM OUR BROW, NO NIGHT BUT HATH ITS MOURN, GOOD-BYE UNTIL IN A BRIGHTER CHIME, WE SAY GOOD MORNING.
