68 years ago today, on the 21st August 1956, Acting Sergeant Walter Thomas John Rodway, 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion (Reg No-3175), machinist or fettler from Edden Street, Adamstown, New South Wales, father of three (Walter Francis, Marian May, David Clyde), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 75. ANGLICAN 3-196. 8.

Born at Hobart, Tasmania about 1881 to Walter Francis and Marion Rodway; husband of Agnes Rodway nee Tripney, married 1900, Adamstown, N.S.W., died 13.1.1965, Taree, N.S.W., age 84, Wal enlisted on the 11th July 1916 at Broadmeadow, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A30 Borda on the 17th October 1916.
Disembarked at Melbourne 19.10.1916 (sick, diphtheria).

Wal was discharged on the 10th November 1916.
Mr. Rodway’s name has been inscribed on the Adamstown Citizens' Memorial and the Adamstown Municipal District Roll of Honor.

I have placed poppies at Wal’s gravesite in remembrance of his sacrifice for God, King & Country.
