Biography contributed by Aberfoyle Park High School

"Mr. and Mrs. Fred Willard and family, of North Yelta, were officially notified on September 8 that their son (Private F. Willard, signaller) had been killed in action in France on August 6. Private Willard was a fine stamp of soldier, and was 20 years and three months old. He was highly respected by all who came in contact with him. He was a scholar of the Yelta Methodist Sunday School, and always took an active part in the work. Deceased was an ardent lover of all kinds of sport, and had the appearance of a promising footballer. He was a member of the Loyal Daly Lodge and the Independent Order of Rechabites. He was educated at the Moonta School. After some time in Egypt, he was sent to France, where he spent a few months in the trenches. Prior to enlisting he was employed in Mr. C. Smith's implement factory, Ardressan. Great sympathy is felt throughout the district for the parents and family." - from the Adelaide Daily Herald 30 Sep 1916 (nla.gov.au)
