Walter Ernest Hasemer was an Australian soldier of Christian faith who was born in Granville, New South Wales in Australia on the 3rd of April in 1900. Hasemer’s family consisted of his three sisters; Ivy Fanny Hasemer, Linda Mary Hasemer and Edna Clarence Hasemer along with one brother named Leonard Hasemer. Walter Ernest Hasemer’s parents were Clarence James Hasemer and Fanny Wilkins, Walter Ernest Hasemer’s father was an engineer with his own established engineering firm. Walter Ernest Hasemer attended Parramatta Public School from the years 1906-1912 and attended Sydney Technical High School from the years 1913-1918 and pursued his Engineering career at Granville Technical College. Throughout Walter Ernest’s Hasemer’s education, he completed a Fitting and Machining stage 2 course, an honours in Engineering Trade Drawing 1 in 1916 and achieved a Grade C in Fitting and Machining 2 and Trade Calculations in 1917. Walter Ernest Hasemer later worked as a fitters apprentice in 1918 before he enlisted in WW1 as he already had 4 years of cadet experience as a 2nd Lieutenant.
Walter Ernest Hasemer had very loving parents who worried for his safety “If there is a request in force where a minor cannot be sent away then I will not permit him to enlist.” However Walter Ernest Hasemer’s parents would also support Walter’s dreams as shown in “I hereby give my permission for my son Walter to enlist for active service.” as they give Walter permission to serve in the War as he wishes to enlist. At the time, Walter Ernest Hasemer was finishing highschool and got a position to work as a fitters apprentice as a part in his father’s company. From a young age Walter Ernest Hasemer was talented at mathematical engineering drawings which made Walter aspire to be an engineer at his father’s company, however, Walter Ernest Hasemer later discovered that working as a fitters apprentice required similar engineering principles.
After enlistment Hasemer trained at Liverpool from 15th April - 16th October 1918. He left Australia to fight 2 November 1918 on the HMAT Medic from Sydney. The war ended only a few days later and the troopship was recalled and returned the men to Australia arriving 12th December 1918. Hasemer was discharged 23/12/1918.
Walter Ernest Hasemer’s married Christina Mcqueen Eyre on 24 May 1928 at the St Marks Anglican Church in Granville. On the 28th of March, 1930 Walter Ernest Hasemer became an engineer with his brother Leonard Hasemer. On 15 Jul 1930 his daughter Judith Winfred Hasemer was born. After the death of Clarence John Hasemer on the 28th of June 1931, Walter Ernest Hasemer took control over his business. He first worked as engineer alongside his brother Leonard Hasemer and then became the Engineering Director of the Clyde Engineering Coy. which was originally his father’s company.
Walter Ernest Hasemer passed away on the 16th of April in 1981 at the age of 81 of unknown causes.
