Died on this date – 15th February…… Private Stepney Wilmot Jones was born at Upper Swan, Western Australia around 1880.
He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 20th October, 1916 as a 36 year old, single, Engineer from Melbourne, Victoria.
Private Stepney Wilmot Jones, Service Number 7105, embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Hororata (A20) on 23rd November, 1916 with the 7th Infantry Battalion, 23rd Reinforcements. Private Jones was promoted to Lance Corporal on 23rd January, 1917 aboard the Hororata but for the voyage only. He disembarked at Plymouth, England on 29th January, 1917.
Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.
On 12th February, 1917 Private Jones was admitted to Fargo Military Hospital, Wiltshire with Bronchitis (slight).
Private Stepney Wilmot Jones died at 4.30 p.m. on 15th February, 1917 at Fargo Military Hospital, Wiltshire from Bronchitis.
He was buried in Durrington Cemetery, Wiltshire where 140 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
