Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Percy Taylor was the son of John Taylor of Adelong, New South Wales. His mother had passed away when he was four years of age.

His older brother, 2259 Gunner William Taylor 11th Field Artillery Brigade AIF was killed in action three months later on 5 August 1917, aged 32.

Percy Taylor’s wife had died in late 1914, and left him with four little children (three girls and one boy). After placing the girls with kindly relatives and the eldest boy at school, Taylor enlisted during April 1916.

He only joined the 3rd Battalion in France on 11 April 1917 and was killed in action at Bullecourt less than three weeks later. Reports in his Red Cross wounded and missing file all state that he was shot and killed instantly in the front line by an enemy sniper. Although buried in a marked grave his remains were subsequently lost.

Percy Taylor’s war medals were sent to his son, Arthur Taylor who was 12 years old when his father died.
